Key Stage 1

Key Stage 1 lasts two years – between the ages of five and seven – and builds on the basics already learnt. During the Foundation Stage your child will have developed the practical and social skills to cope with life in the classroom and been given a grounding in the literacy and numeracy skills and interest in the world around them that will be developed during Key Stage 1.

Children's progress will be assessed by the Key Stage 1 National Tests, which are held increasingly as a series of Tasks between January and May of Year 2, when most children will be aged seven.

The aim of these tests is:

  • To provide your child with a sense of achievement having reached and passed required standards.
  • To provide you and your school with a measure of your child's progress.
  • To help schools target their resources where they're most needed.
  • To help the Government assess the education system, and ensure that children are progressing well in the core subjects of English and Maths.

At the end of Key Stage 1 your child is expected to attain Level 2 of the National Curriculum . This is known as their Attainment Target. These levels are a benchmark that can show what your child has learned and how they have progressed.

There are levels of attainment within each subject, called Attainment Targets . The Levels show what the child has learned: they start at Level 1 in Key Stage 1. Level Descriptions state what a child should achieve at each level. Level Descriptions consist of several 'goals': when the teacher assesses your child, and he or she has achieved all of these goals, then your child is given a level.
